Weekend Football Review

Our sides returned to league action at the weekend with differing fortunes.

In the National League North, Curzon Ashton were looking to bounce back from Tuesday night's defeat to Blyth Spartans and did so convincingly, cruising to a 3-0 win against AFC Telford Utd.Goals on the afternoon came courtesy of Smales-Braithwaite, Connor Hampson and Richards. The Nash, who move up to 16th in the table, are back in action on Saturday and make the trip to Chorley.

In the NPL Premier Division, Hyde United were looking to get back on track in their pursuit of the title and faced a tough trip to Marine. Nick Spooner's side were held to a goalless draw in Merseyside - a result which leaves the Tigers third in the table ahead of next weekend's home tie against Gainsborough Trinity (2pm kick-off)

Elsewhere, Ashton United were looking to build on their previous 3-0 win over Bamber Bridge, however they were dealt a 1-0 defeat at Lancaster City. Bradley Carroll's 86th minute effort was enough to separate the sides at the Gian Axe. The Robins are 12th in the table and face a tough trip to title-chasing South Shields next weekend (1pm kick-off).

Stalybridge Celtic had the opportunity to extend their unbeaten league run to three games, however Chris Willcock's side squandered a one goal lead through Raul Correia to lose 2-1 to Warrington Rylands. A Kelly N'Mai double in the 78th and 83rd minute capped off a miserable day at Bower Fold. Celtic, 20th in the table, make the trip to fifth placed Warrington Town next weekend.

In the NPL West, Mossley fought back from a goal down in the early stages to take a 2-1 victory against City of Liverpool at Seel Park. Daniel Mithcley put the visitors ahead in the fifth minute, but the Lilywhites responded well and proved their playoff credentials soon after. Mason Fawns drew matters level on the half hour mark, before Jack Banister scored what turned out to be the winning goal on the stroke of half-time. David Fish's side are fifth in the table and make the trip to Hanley Town next weekend.

It was a day to forget for Glossop North End who fell to a 3-2 defeat at Clitheroe. The hosts wen 3-1 up in the fixture, and despite an 88th minute goal from Jacques Etia - his second of the fixture - the Hillmen didn't have enough to find an equaliser in the dying stages. Glossop, 15th in the table, have a great chance to bounce back next weekend with a trip to rock bottom Widnes.

In the Cheshire League One, Denton Town are top of the table after a 3-1 win at Maine Road Reserves. Darren Saville's side host Knutsford in the JA Walton Challenge Cup next weekend.
