United View: The Reds head to the World Cup

Old Trafford - home of Manchester United.

The World Cup is over halfway done and with the group stages reaching the latter stages, here's a quick rundown of how the Manchester United internationals are getting on for their respected countries.

Group A – Netherlands (Tyrell Malacia)

Not much to discuss here. The Netherlands have progressed through the group stages top of their group, but Malacia hasn’t featured yet for Louis Van Gaal’s side. Hopefully, the young full-back can get some minutes against the United States in the first knockout stage.

Group B – England (Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford)

United’s English internationals have been in fine form at the World Cup so far. Maguire and Shaw have started each game, even being the two stand-out players against the United States in a drab affair.

Meanwhile, since Bobby Charlton, Rashford has become the first Manchester United player to score 3 goals at the World Cup for England. England finished top of their group and will face Senegal in the round of 16.

Group C – Argentina (Lisandro Martinez)

At the time of writing, Argentina has yet to play their decisive fixture against Poland. The South Americans got off to a shocking start, losing 2-1 to Saudi Arabia. A game that Martinez did not start. However, they then won 2-0 against Mexico to keep their chances of qualification alive.

A game that Martinez did start. If they know what's good for them, they’ll make sure he starts their final game against Poland.

Group D – Tunisia (Hannibal Mejbri) and Denmark (Christian Eriksen)

Hannibal is a young prospect at United but has only made a small cameo in the 0-0 draw with Denmark in the opening game of group D. Christian Eriksen started that game but wasn’t able to break down a solid Tunisian defence. Both teams sit on 1 point, both needing a win to progress. Tunisia takes on France, whereas Denmark face Australia.

Group H – Portugal (DIogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes) and Uruguay (Facundo Pellistri)

Dalot is another yet-to feature for his country, being the second choice to Joao Cancelo. However, Bruno Fernandes is starting and tearing it up for his country. United’s ‘Portuguese magnifico’ has racked up 2 goals and 2 assists in the matches against Ghana and Uruguay.

Meanwhile, Pellistri has been impressive for Uruguay despite never featuring for United. Maybe it’s time to give the young man a chance. Portugal faces South Korea in their final match. Whereas Uruguay squares off against Ghana in their crunch match.

Group G – Brazil (Antony, Casemiro and Fred)

The favourites Brazil have already progressed through to the knockout stages. With all three getting game time for the 5-time winners. Casemiro scored the only goal in their last match against Switzerland, showing his class on the biggest stage.

Fred also started that match, coming in for the injured Neymar. A like-for-like replacement. Hopefully, Antony can get a start in their final match against Cameroon on Friday night.

With all these players gone it's entirely possible that at least one player will return to Old Trafford with a World Cup winners medal. Following in the footsteps of club icons such as Bobby Charlton, Nobby Styles and Juan Mata. Let's just hope they all return in one piece.
