Stamford Professional Heaps Praise On Volunteers

Golf Clubs, like so many sports clubs rely more and more on volunteers giving up their free time to get involved in a variety of roles at their beloved clubs.

Stamford Golf Club are one of many clubs who have groups of volunteers helping out with jobs on the course, clubhouse etc and their respected professional Mark Smith gave due thanks to some of the club members.

He said: “More progress and commitment from our superb group of volunteers in recent weeks with the steps on the second hole receiving some tender loving care.

“This is just another project that the Club have benefitted from the input of a small group of individuals. The hours of hard work have undoubtedly helped the SGC.

“Compliments to each and every one of you. If any of our members  fancy getting involved, contact us in the Pro Shop and we’ll point you in the right direction!

Stamford’s men enjoyed a BB Stableford Turkey Shoot and pulling the biggest birds were J Etchells and T Gaffey 41 from D Hough and J Kershaw 40 and G Salisbury and M Liddle, A and J Sharples and S Fletcher and S Barker, all 39.

Next day there was an Open Turkey Shoot and some impressive scoring was led in by P Bradwell and G Broadbent 48.

A singles Stableford at Saddleworth was won by Kenny Clements 41 from Bryn Lawton 40 and Brandon Schofield 39.

A BB Stableford at Saddleworth had Jonathan Hobday and Duncan Jackson on top with 47 from Alan Ramsden and Peter Beswick 45.

A BB Medal at Saddleworth was won by the old firm of Tad Knebel and Martin Heap 61 from Duncan Jackson and Dave McKenna 63 and Allan McGroarty and Phil Stevenson 64.

Saddleworth ladies played a shotgun Team of Three Stableford led in by Jean Dervan, Sue Knebel and Liz Pugh 75 from Maxine Parfitt, Bev Mercer and Chris Peirson 70.

Ashton seniors played a Canadian Foursomes and M Easthope and N Seabright won with 48, two more than S North and M Byrne.

It was close in a Three Man Am Am 15-hole Stableford at Ashton with D Howarth, E Sidebottom and S Walker first past the post with73, one more than S Carroll, D Hurst and B Froggatt.

The Sunday Stableford at Ashton had the three divisions topped by Mark Schooler 39, Mike Scowcroft 37 and Barry Fegan 41.

The fourth Race to the Start at Brookdale had division one led in by Keith Williams after a cpo on 66 with Anthony Curran, two less than Peter Lloyd and Jerry Harris.

In division two club legend Keith Miller led in with 68, three less than Ian Pontefract.

Stableford action for Brookdale ladies had Susan Clarke in charge with 31 from Stella Cain and Bev Mercer, both 27.

A ladies Stableford at Dukinfield was won by Debbie Cooke 30 from Helen Slattery 28 and Karen Harper 26.

Duki’s  men played a singles Stableford with the divisions led in by Chris Clough 39, Paul Evans after a cpo on 41 with Mark Elam and Jack Pennington 37.

The Wednesday Stableford at Denton was won by Tony Phillips34 from John Fox 30 and Vincent Froggatt 29.

A BB Stableford at Denton was won by S Boyd and N Graham 40 from D Garner and S Dugdale 39 and D Watts and D Large 38.

Next day a Two from Three Stableford had V and K McEvoy and T Leech in firm control with 76 from M Percival, J Mulhearn and A Winterbottom and N Graham, K Brearley and M Alexander both 38.

A ladies 9-hole Stableford at Denton needed a cpo on 17 to see Pam Wisely in top spot from Hazel Hathaway, two more than Angela Ellam.

Denton Juniors latest competition sponsored by Ian McIlvanney was won by Roman Hicks from Eva Morgan with James Palmer having the shot of the day>

There was a strong field playing for the historic Manchester Alliance Hancock Trophy at its new venue of Davyhulme Park GC after many years being hosted by Sale GC.

The players enjoyed good weather and the course quality saw some excellent scores posted, backed by fine clubhouse hospitality.

The day was sponsored by John Davies (Davyhulme Park) who had England Senior Ladies champion Cath Rawthore (Sale) as his parner.

Home star Alison Sleigh partnered Steve Cooper of High Legh Park to a top am am score of 45 to see them to top spo by a point from Helen Braddock Bolton GC and her partner international table tennis star John Hilton (Mottram Hall).

They won a cpo from another home pair Chris and Linda Lane.

The top pro am prize was won by Callum Blinkhorn and is Leigh partner Rachel Higson with 42 from Flixton’s Andy Bridgwood and Sadie Cox.

Callum was also the top pro with 40 from Andy Bridgwood 34.

The host club kept in the prizes as Paul Barton won the nearest the pin prize.
