Stamford Golf Club see success in the Winter League

There were incredible scenes in the 9th year of Winter League at Stamford Golf Club.

Stamford pro Mark Smith said: “After 14 weeks of brutal conditions in a field size of 47 competitors, we have finally found our 2023 Winter League champion in Thomas Crowdy.

“I focussed on this event for some weeks. It’s exciting, extremely competitive and kind of putting course conditions aside, the focus becomes the competition in itself. I've really enjoyed the series,” said Thomas.

Thomas made a three  for three  points on the last hole to win by a single point from Duncan Hough followed by Matt Merson just one point further back in third place.

Mark added: “From the Pro Shop, I thank all the Winter League competitors for their contribution to continue this exciting event when conditions are against us. It never fails to produce exciting results and the bonus is once it’s all over, it’s finally spring!”

A singles Stableford at Stamford had Richard Taylor top of division one with 44 from Roy Sidebottom 43 and Bobby Cheetham 39.

In division two Tony Gaffey was on top with 42 from Duncan Hough 40 and Scott Meehan 39. David Thursatn was the star of division three with 41 from David Ashworth 39 and Philip Lord 38.

The Sunday Pro Shop Stableford at Stamford had a convincing winner in Jermey Kershaw 41, three more than Richard Irving,Terry Merson and Ian Slater.

Plenty of action at Saddleworth with a Pro’s Stableford seeing Steve ‘Majestic’. Moores in a league of his own in division one with 45 from Andrew Li 42 and Mark Dunning 41.

It was closer in division two with Peter Beswick winning a cpo on 43 from David Cattlin, one more than Alan Brogan.

A BB Stableford at Saddleworth had division one led in by Andrew Stott and Nick Edwards 52 from Paul Black and Greg Galloway 48.

Top of division two were Barrie Lees and Graham Hirst 53, two more than Jo Jacombs and Carl Davidson.

A BB medal at Saddleworth had Greg Burgess and Tom Gallagher top of division one  with 61, one less than Tom Simpson and Dean McKenna.

Ashley Dearden and Nathen Mills topped division two with 61 from Bernard Stone and Bernard Andrew 62.A BB Stableford at Brookdale was won by J and M Cassidy 47, one more than D Simpson and P O’Rourke. P Trolan and J Pickles and R Callear and A West.

A third Roll Up at Brookdale was won by Jerry Harris 40, one more than Trevor Mayo and Michael Fitzgerald.

A Junior Stableford at Ashton saw Isabella Moses post a fantastic 55 to romp home from Georgie Price 48 and Isaac Pattison 45.

At the other end of the age scale Ashton Seniors Spring Open Day was won by C Quinlan and B Hobson 49, three more than P Newton and S Smyth, L O’Kane and A Wilson, J Hilton and J Manzano, G Bolton and K Cummings and J Brookwell and S Connor.

A BB Stableford at Ashton was won by A Acton and P Zrada 47 from S Lee and R Nuttall who won a cpo from six other pairs.

Ashton ladies opened their new season with a Greensome Stableford and J Edwards and P Quinlan led in with 42, six more than M Birtles and E Owen and R Cuthbert and J Mackinnon.

A Stableford for Fairfield’s men was led in by Robert McLoughlin after a cpo on 38 with David Wray, three more than Ben Thorley and Neil Dunn.

Crompton and Royton ladies opened their season with a medal for the 1928 Spoon and the proud winner was Yvonne Jackson with 67 from Susan Byrne 68 and Andrea Lowe 72.

A Stableford for C and R’s men had the three divisions topped by Alistair Cameron 37, Aaron Bishop after a cpo on 36 with Michael Tomkinson and Liam Lovell and Daniel Dale 38.

Denton ladies were in Stableford action with Linda Leung on top with 31 from Trish Ferguson 29 and Sharon Murray 27.

Wednesday action at Denton had David Artingstall in charge with 34 from David Sibanda 31 and Lee Thompson 29.

The Opening Day BB Shotgun at Denton was won by A Rimmer and S Giblin 51 from A Nazir and E Fedele and L and J Lee both 44.

The Sunday Stableford at Denton had division one won by Guy Hamer 40, one more than Paul Irving and Alan Savidge.

Dean Blundell was out on his own in division two with 41, four more than Wayne Lord and Robert Nugent.

Denton Seniors Team opened their season with a 6-2 win against Houldsworth.
