Oldham RLFC sign former St Helens star Sean Long as new head coach

Rugby League revival-club Oldham have announced the signing of former St Helens scrum-half Sean Long as their new head coach on a three-year contract. He will head a coaching team of four, working with his assistants Brendan Sheridan, Jordan Turner and Joe Wardle.

“We  are on the march,” said club chairman Bill Quinn, whose ambitious squad strengthening programme also landed 21-year-old St Helens winger Jumah Sambou, the Roughyeds’ 14^th new signing in a massive turnover of players.

  Long, meanwhile, told why he had joined Oldham, saying: “There wasn’t much to think about. The town has been a hot-bed of rugby for many years and I was excited to know I would be helping  to get them back to where they should be. I didn’t really have to think about it.”

He had a glittering playing career, mainly with St Helens, and was Man of Steel in 2000. He then had several assistant coaching jobs before joining Featherstone as head coach early this year. His record was 19 wins in 22 games.
