Oldham golfers earn awards for their efforts

Oldham Golf Club GEMS (Gentlemen Elderly Members) have enjoyed another great and busy season of friendly and competitive golf.

Their Annual Dinner saw the long-running trophies presented to the proud winners.

The ‘Golfer of the Year' was Geoff Allen with ten wins during the season and he won the coveted Hobson Ball.

The Brian Radcliffe Trophy was won by Dave Taylor with a fine total of 84 points in the qualifying competitions.

The 9-hole Knock Out winner was Paul Street who beat Brian Spary in the final.

A singles Stableford for the Gems was won by Barry Cotton with 20 and hot on his heels with 19 were John Billington and John Wood, one more than Peter Schofield, Charlie Middlewood and Paul Street.

The team competition winners with 54 were Geoff Beard, Barry Cotton and Charlie Middlewood.

The Curry Cup at Brookdale was hot with Anthony Allt winning division one with 44 from Anthony Curran and Roger Wolstenholme, both 41 and Steven Todd led in four players on 40.

In division two it was even closer with Greg Hickling winning a cpo on 43 from Doug Unsworth, one more than Michael Nelson, Ian Pontefract and Phil Jamieson.

A singles Stableford at Brookdale had Gary Lever top of division one after a cpo on 40 with Jonathan Bassey, two more than Peter Lloyd.

Ethan Shacklady was out on his own in division two with 41, two more than DB Taylor and Michael Owen.

Plenty of action at Ashton with a Seniors BB Stableford won by A Kiami and G Nelson 49 from J Meeks and J Howard 48.

A Greensome Foursome Stableford was won by R Baker and soccer legend Micky Haughton with 37 from A Marshall and B Birtles 36 and M Newman and G Brooks and A Dawson and D Jones, both 35.

A Bucket Pairs Stableford had M Butterworth and F Sidebottom leading in with 43 from P White and D Bacon 42 and N Kay and F Turner topped three pairs on 41.

A pro shop Stableford at Stamford had Nick Goodwin first past the post with 38 from Matthew Merson 37 and John Sharples and Martin Dwyer, both 36.

 A Wednesday Stableford at Denton was a close contest with Jonathan Berwick winning a cpo on 31 from Tony Phillips and Duane Marshall, one more than club legend Jim Cox.

A singles Stableford at Denton had Gary Overend top of division one with 33 and two points behind were Steve O’Shaughnessy, Derek Stanley, John Strickland, Dean Murray, Andrew Naismith, Keiron Lee and Jeremy Sparrow.

In division two Neil Roberts led in with 33 from Duane Marshall and Steven Dugdale, both 32.

A Four Man Team Stableford at Saddleworth had the powerful combo Marners’ Madhouse team of D and B Pullen, G Cavallino and Nick Marner on top with 93.

Just a point behind were Dubious Reserves Devy, G Bearpark, L Thompson and A Head, and Housewives Choice P Paxford, N Hughes, R Sutton and M Timperley and A McKenna, J Taylor, A Jackson and D Ashton.
