Northern Premier League final day preview

The Northern Premier League season draws to a close on Saturday (22 April), with some of our Tameside clubs still having something to play for going into the final day.

First up is Hyde United, of the Northern Premier League Premier Division, who will have a play-off spot in their sights after moving up to fifth in the table last week thanks to an emphatic 4-0 win at home to Marine. They face a tough away trip to second-placed Warrington Town on the final day, knowing a win would guarantee their place in the playoffs, though a draw or loss may be enough if other results go their way. This is unlikely however as sixth-placed Radcliffe Borough are level on points with Hyde, and only behind them on goal difference, so the Tigers will likely need all three points in their game.

Next is Ashton United, who will be looking to end the season on a high following a poor patch of form. The Robins currently sit in 15th place and face a trip to third-placed Bamber Bridge for their final fixture of the season. Steve Cunningham’s men went on a terrific run of form throughout the month of March, winning four games on the bounce, and looking like they would finish the season strongly. However, the next few games did not go to plan and United lost their next four, including a 5-0 thrashing at home to FC United of Manchester, so they will be hoping they can finish the season strongly with a win.

As for Stalybridge Celtic, their relegation from the division was confirmed on Tuesday, as they lost 4-2 away to Marske United, in a must-win game. Chris Willcock’s men will be looking to give the fans something to smile about on Saturday, as they face Atherton Collieries in their final game of the campaign, at Bower Fold.

Another Tameside club in action on Saturday is Mossley AFC, of the Northern Premier League West Division, who have sadly missed out on a spot in the play-offs after a goalless draw against City of Liverpool FC last week. The club currently sit in seventh place, and welcome champions-elect Macclesfield to Seel Park for their final outing of the season, which is sure to be a tough test.

Finally, Glossop North End, of the Northern Premier League West Division, still have work to do going into the final day, if they are to save themselves from relegation. The club currently sits in 19th place and will likely need a win away at Bootle to have any chance of staying up, though a draw may still be enough, should results go their way. If Glossop win, they still have to hope the team above them, Colne, drop points away to Workington, though if Colne are beaten heavily, Glossop can survive by only drawing their final game.
