Michael Worthington leaves Glossop North End

Glossop North End have this week parted ways with manager Michael Worthington, after a tough start to the 2023/24 campaign.

It comes after their disappointing 3-2 defeat away to FC Isle of Man on Saturday.

The former Clitheroe man was only appointed back in May, but a dismal run of matches has resulted in his dismissal.

Following Worthington’s departure, Glossop North End released a statement:

“Today, (23 October) Michael Worthington and Glossop North End Football Club have amicably parted ways. As the team finds itself in the 22nd position, having secured only 4 wins (15 points) out of 20 games, the Board has determined that a change is necessary.

“Richard Brodie will assume interim managerial responsibilities while the Club embarks on a comprehensive search for a new Manager. Richard will convene with the squad tomorrow evening, and we will provide further updates as the process unfolds.

“The Board extends its gratitude to Michael for his unwavering dedication and hard work throughout the season and wishes him the very best in his future endeavours.”

Michael Worthington also released a statement:

“Tough to put into words how I’m feeling. I’m gutted to be leaving the club but also accept football is a results business, and our results haven’t been good enough against targets set at the start of the season.”

Worthington then went on to thank the board, staff and players for their support, before ending the statement with a thank you to the fans:

“To the GNE fans. Without doubt the most passionate fan base I have come across in non league football. To those who supported us from day one, right through to the game last weekend, thank you, I cannot put into words how much it means.”

He also went on to say, “I have no doubt GNE will be fine this season and will return to the Northern Premier League.”

Up next for The Hillmen is a league match this weekend, when they host Irlam on Saturday (28 October).
