Droylsden’s love affair with cup competitions continued on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Darwen FC in the second round of the Macron Cup.

The Bloods once again left it late to get a result.

After only five minutes, Droylsden was forced into a change with Owen Whitehead coming on for the injured Joseph Keyworth. And Whitehead would soon turn provider after his cross was headed home from Nelson Van for his 7th of the campaign.

Darwen, who currently sits 10th in the First Division North, scored the equaliser 15 minutes into the second half. Chris Smalley’s effort provided the goal for the Salmoners.

Dave Pace’s side thought they’d retaken the lead after only five minutes, but George West was deemed to be offside, and his goal was cancelled out. It would have been his 20th goal in all competitions.

It looked as though the game was heading towards penalties, until the fourth minute of stoppage time when Caelan Kilheeney scored the winner on his debut. Picking the ball up on the edge of the area, shifting to his left foot and curling a sublime finish into the top corner.

The Bloods then followed this up with a 2-0 win over Stockport Georgians on Tuesday night in the league, before welcoming Stafford Town to the Butchers Arms on Saturday. Where they’ll be hoping to stretch their unbeaten run to seven games.
