Glossop Stifle Local Rivals Stockport In Curtain Raiser

The Glossop Amazones kicked off the new season with a victory over local rivals Stockport Scarets.

On a beautiful day on Hargate Hill, Glossop had 22 players at their disposal whilst the visitors mustered 12 faces for the curtain raiser.

Whilst the opening exchanges of the fixture proved to be a lively affair, the visitors were dealt a major blow when one of their players was forced to withdraw from the action due to an ankle injury. However, in true sporting spirit, the Amazones stepped in and provided one of their own players to even out the numbers.

Not soon after and with some great hands and forward pressure the first try of the match was scored by the Amazones new captain Sarah, but they were unable to build on their score with a failed conversion.

Pressure was maintained by both sides but again great forwards effort saw Cath bundle over for the Amazones’ second, again no conversion. Scarlets soon featured on the scoreboard with their own two tries, one of which was converted to give them a 10-12 lead into the half-time break.

The re-start gave the hosts a chance to make some changes and the Amazones used their substitutes and gave all 22 players match time.

Th second half was a close affair with the Scarlets not relenting even with tired legs,  an injury to a Glossop player delayed the half with the game moved to the second pitch.

The half resumed and the Amazones asserted themselves and Captain Sarah went over again for her second try. After five minutes and more great pressure one of the seven new players for the Amazones, Amy, bulldozed through the visitors’ defence to claim the fourth try.

The Scarlets played until the dying embers and their efforts were rewarded with another try to make the ifnal score 20-17.

The Amazones return to action on Saturday, October 8 against Sedgeley  Park.
