Ashton United bring in Newton as player and assistant manager

Ashton United have bolstered their ranks by recruiting experienced defender Sean Newton as a player and assistant manager.

Newton played a key role in Buxton's promotion to the National League North under new Robins boss Steve Cunningham last season.

He will be available for selection and in the dugout for Saturday's trip to Whitby Town.

The former Lincoln City, York City and Stockport County man has so far racked up over 300 professional appearances in his career.

Manager Cunningham told Ashton United's website: "Sean is an unbelievable signing for the football club and brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the camp as my new player/assistant manager.

"Sean played a big part in leading Buxton to the title last season after I signed him from York City. The opportunity to sign Sean as a player and bring him in as a player/assistant manager was an opportunity I could not turn down.

"Sean will become a fans favourite in no time as he has done at all his previous clubs."

Buxton Football Club said in a statement: "We thank Sean for his incredible contribution during his 11 months with the club, including the recent caretaker position, and we wish him the best of luck as he takes his next steps into management."
