10 years of fun with Glossop Military Fitness

Glossop Military Fitness have been keeping the community active for a decade, and founder Andrew Cornner couldn’t be prouder of his dedicated members.

Moving to Glossop with his wife in 2012, Andy decided to trial some outdoor fitness classes, having previously worked as a personal trainer.

These sessions were an immediate hit, with people from across Glossop sharing their love for the classes.

Originally, Glossop Military Fitness aimed to offer fitness sessions for women, especially mums with young children, but before long the community outgrew the original plan.

“The first few sessions were a great success, so we became a regular fixture in Manor Park. Two classes soon became four, and then we quickly became unisex.

“Before we knew it, we were running eight classes a week,” Andy said.

Serving in the Navy, Andy uses his military expertise to coordinate effective sessions, aimed at all ability levels.

“The classes are predominantly outdoor based circuits, open to everyone, for those who like the fresh air and aren’t comfortable with the indoor gym environment.

“Our aim is to create an atmosphere where people can train as a community, and actually have fun while they exercise.

“The classes are always varied, fun and as challenging as the members want to make them. We have members from aged 15 right up to 71 and from all walks of life,” he said.

Aside from the fitness benefits, Andy has seen the Glossop community come together through his classes.

Originally planning sessions for mums, back in 2013 women would come with their toddlers or prams, now in 2023 these same mums train with their 9 and 10-year-old children.

Glossop Military Fitness members have developed into a family, taking part in various trips and exciting projects.

“As part of the community element of the classes, we have taken part in multiple challenges, weekends away and charity events.

“I like to see members trying something new, pushing their boundaries and most importantly having fun with exercise.

“We have taken several trips to hike in the Lake District and Snowdon. These are excellent team bonding experience and are great for everyone to let their hair down.”

As well as this, Glossop Military Fitness have raised money for various charities, including local funds such as Mummy’s Star and Reuben’s Retreat.

Andy has had incredible support from members of the community, who have been instrumental in joining classes and keeping active.

“It is unbelievable how the people of Glossop have embraced the classes and I feel truly blessed by the continued support I am shown.

“This year we have our ultimate challenge taking place to celebrate 10 years of Glossop Military Fitness and also ten years of Mummy’s Star,” Andy explained.

This fantastic challenge will see members take on a 24 hour ‘Fitathlon’ in Manor Park. Here, they will challenge themselves to complete multiple sessions throughout the 24 hours.

The aim is to raise as much money as possible for Mummy’s Star, an excellent way to celebrate the two fantastic groups.

Glossop Military Fitness is a welcoming, inclusive community that empowers people to enjoy exercise.

They train on a Monday at 7pm and 8pm, Tuesday at 9.15am, Wednesday at 6am and 8pm, Thursday at 7pm, Friday at 9.15am and Saturday at 7am, meaning there’s plenty of options to get involved.
