Tributes have been paid following the death of Melvin Warhurst

Tributes have been paid following the death of Melvin Warhurst who was instrumental in founding live theatre in Glossop.

Mr Warhurst, who died on December 27 aged 96, held a variety of roles with Partington Theatre and until recently regularly attended performances at the Henry Street playhouse.

Partington Theatre reporting the death on its website, said: "Everyone at Partington Players send their condolences."

The statement continued: "Melvin devoted his entire life to Partington Theatre.

"He joined Glossop Reparatory in 1955 and was a founder member of Partington Players.

"From the end of 1958 he took on a whole gamut of roles within the company; actor, set construction, painter, in general maintenance, treasurer and company director, ending with his role as president of the society.

"Even aged 96 he supported the theatre by attending plays.

"Sadly, due to his health, this was the first year that Melvin was unable to attend the annual general meeting and this season's plays.

"He was a wonderful producer, a great orator and s true gentleman."
