Spotlight on sustainable travel in Glossop

Nearly 50 people took the opportunity to put forward their ideas for developing sustainable travel in Glossopdale at a public conversation held on Sunday.

After hearing from expert speakers, they discussed ways to improve bus services, create safer walking and cycling and get people out of their cars.

The round table groups put forward ideas about where and when buses are needed; where footpaths need to be joined up; setting up a car club; e-bike hire; ways to improve trains; and even the idea of pedestrianising part of the High Street.

Helen Thornhill of Move More Glossop, the Co-ordinator of Glossopdale Action for Sustainable Travel (GAST) said: “This is the start of an exciting journey to create a viable, desirable network for traveling sustainably around Glossopdale and beyond.”

Amongst the speakers was the leader of a Buxton Town Team project which has come up with a Sustainable Travel Plan for the town.

"We have been greatly inspired by the work in Buxton and we hope to do something very similar for Glossop,” said Helen.

Councillor Damien Greenhalgh said: “I was delighted to speak at this community conversation event in Glossop and see the passion, experience and enthusiasm for better and more sustainable public transport options and improved infrastructure for cycling and walking throughout Glossopdale.

“High Peak Borough Council sees active travel as being essential to the wellbeing of the people of High Peak.”

GAST was set up following a High Peak Green New Deal meeting about sustainable transport last autumn and has been conducting a survey amongst local residents to find out what changes people would like to see to their local environment.

Surveys are available from George Street bookshop or the library or you can fill it in online at www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/Glossoptravelsurvey
