NOSTALGIA: A champion result for young Glossopdale cricketers

PLEASANT MEMORIES: All smiles from the Sunday school champions of 75 years ago.

They prayed together and played together and in the summer of 1947 they were the best Sunday school cricketers in Glossopdale.

Some of the players in the picture of Mount Pleasant Cricket Club seem a little too old to be attending Sunday school.

But they all turned up at the church at the corner of Princess Street, Glossop, for bible stories and hymns.

Seventy-five years ago this month they were crowned champions of the Glossop and District Sunday School Cricket League.

Mount Pleasant celebrated by taking on players in a team representing the rest of the league.

The champions lost two wickets without a run on the board, but recovered to make 153.

It was a total the league side never looked capable of challenging, the all-out score was 81 and 23 of them came from extras.

The league that included teams from Dinting, Littlemoor and Whitfield Sunday schools was disbanded a few years later.

Mount Pleasant Chapel closed and it is now apartments.

Unfortunately we have been unable to discover where the team played its home matches. If you know, please get in touch by emailing david.jones@questmedianetwork.co.uk
