New equipment helping Whitfield Womblers keep area tidy

New equipment is helping the Whitfield Womblers to keep the local area clean and tidy.

The group goes out on the second Saturday of every month, meeting at 10.30am outside Pure Vibes on Ebenezer Street.

Everyone of any age is welcome. For updates, you can check the Whitfield Womblers Facebook group.

The group's Clare Hennessy is excited about the new equipment, which has been supported by local councillors.

She said: "Up until recently, I have been borrowing hoops and pickers from The Bureau in Glossop. Although I totally appreciated their kind support, it was a bit of a faff collecting and returning the equipment each month. Our local councillor, Deputy Mayor Graham Oakley, was willing to fund Whitfield Womblers for some pickers however, Councillor Damien Greenhalgh stepped in and got us 10 hoops and 10 pickers from High Peak Borough Council.

"As strange as it may sound, I was extremely excited about getting the new equipment! And, they're excellent quality so no more heavy bags falling out of the hoops or bags being blown around on blustery days.

"I'm so grateful to High Peak Borough Council for providing the bags, taking our full bags away and responding quickly to any reports of fly tipping and particularly bad grot spots. I'm also extremely grateful to all the amazing volunteers throughout the year, who turn up with smiles on their faces and just get on with it, whatever the weather."

Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, deputy leader of High Peak Borough Council, said: “I'm delighted that the Whitfield Womblers group has the use of this fab new equipment. I know from personal experience that they make all the difference when litterpicking.

“High Peak Borough Council delivering for our communities in close cooperation with them is part of the change that High Peak Labour Councillors and I are proud to be making happen.”
