New crossing planned for busy road in Glossop

The crossing on Dinting Road.

Traffic lights are going to be installed at a crossing on a busy Glossop road following concerns raised after a school pupil was hit by a vehicle.

The pupil, from Glossopdale School, was left with injuries which required hospital treatment.

Governors from the school have petitioned to get a traffic light system put in place for six years.

PCSO Brian Buller conducted a speed watch at the crossing point on Dinting Road.

Helen Thornhill, from the organisation Move More Glossop, counted the students, while PCSO Buller counted the cars. In the space of 30 minutes, 230-plus students crossed and more than 400 cars went through the crossing.

The speed limit is 30mph from Shaw Lane, but then it speeds up to 40mph just before the crossing.

Move More Glossop and Cllr Damien Greenhalgh are pushing for a 20mph speed limit at the crossing.

But, because the site is next to an open field it warrants a higher speed limit, according to Derbyshire County Council.

A spokesperson for the council said: “We are very sorry to hear about the accident and hope the student makes a full recovery.

“We already have funding earmarked for a traffic light-controlled crossing at this location and design work is currently underway on this.

“Work to install the crossing is due to take place during the summer holidays with the intention that it is in place for the start of the new school term in September.

“We are aiming to carry out the work during the holidays to avoid any work taking place when the crossing point is at its busiest.”
