Labour is celebrating after the local elections saw the party win 29 of the 43 seats available on High Peak Borough Council. 

The Green Party also retained their two seats on the Council in the Hope Valley ward and Independent candidate Dan Capper won one of the two seats in Blackbrook. 

However, the Conservatives suffered significant losses and now have just 10 seats.  

It could have been even worse after a seat in Cote Heath was retained only after Conservative Kev Kirkham’s name was pulled out of the ballot box instead of Labour’s Alan Smith after the results were tied. 

It was a tough day for the Liberal Democrats as they lost two seats and now have a single councillor, David Lomax, in Whaley Bridge - the borough’s longest-serving councillor, having been first elected in 1991. 

The experienced David Lomax is the only remaining Liberal Democrat councillor on High Peak Borough Council 

In total, 122 candidates had put themselves forward in the 28 wards. 

The High Peak count was held at the Octagon in the Pavilion Gardens on Friday, starting at 10am with the final result announced at 3.30pm. 

The results as they happened 

Chapel West was the first result to be announced, with Conservative Kath Sizeland retaining her seat, while Labour made their first gain with Sally De Pee winning the seat which was previously held by Stewart Young of the Conservatives.

Next up, the Hope Valley ward saw Green Party councillors Joanna Collins and Charlotte Farrell retain their seats.

Turnout: 50.7%

In Simmondley, Labour - who already held one of the seats - gained the second at the expense of the Conservatives.

Turnout: 45.79%

The Conservatives retained both seats they held in Old Glossop by just 16 votes, with Adie Hopkinson a new face after Jamie Douglas decided not to stand again.

Turnout: 49.44%

The Conservatives also retained Chapel East - this time by just seven votes - as Nigel Gourlay kept his seat.

Whitfield saw Labour retain the seat with a new face in Barbara Hastings-Asatourian, after former Mayor Graham Oakley decided to stand down. 

Results: Norma Fozard, (Conservative) 89; BARBARA HASTINGS-ASATOURIAN, (LABOUR) 392; Philip Taylor, (Green Party) 53. 

Turnout: 30.18%

In Buxton’s Temple ward, the Conservatives retained the seat. 

Results: Louise Glasscoe, (Liberal Democrat) 59; David Newton, (Green Party) 117; PAM REDDY, (CONSERVATIVE) 407; Tony Riddington, (Labour) 339. 

Turnout: 51.99%

The two-seat Cote Heath saw Conservative Linda Grooby retain her seat while fellow Conservative Kev Kirkham tied with Labour’s Alan Smith. Rather than a coin toss, both names were put in the ballot box and Kev Kirkham’s was pulled out.

In Tintwistle, Rob Baker retained his seat for Labour.

The three-seat ward of Whaley Bridge returned the same result as at the last election, with two Labour councillors and one Liberal Democrat elected.

A further gain for the Labour party from the Conservatives was the seat in Burbage.

In Dinting, the Conservatives retained the seat by just 17 votes with a new face in Dom Elliott-Starkey.

In Glossop, Labour retained both seats they held in Howard Town.

Both Labour and the Conservatives retained the seats they held in Corbar. It was a close result, with Labour only missing out on taking both seats by five votes.

In Padfield, current High Peak Mayor Ollie Cross retained his seat for Labour.

Ian Huddlestone was one of two Labour councillors elected in New Mills East 

The turnout in Gamesley was just 16.06%, the lowest in the High Peak, with Labour councillor and Council Leader Anthony Mckeown comfortably retaining his seat. 

Result: Matthew Firth, (Green Party) 27; ANTHONY MCKEOWN, (LABOUR) 205; Mick Reddy, (Conservative) 39.

The Conservatives retained Limestone Peak as Peter Roberts was re-elected.

Turnout: 32.53%

In Blackbrook, both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats lost a seat each, with Labour's Angela Benham and Independent Dan Capper winning the ward.

The Conservatives' final loss of the day was in the St John’s ward as Pauline Bell was elected for Labour.
