Join the conversation about sustainable travel in Glossopdale

A public conversation event for people to put forward their ideas for sustainable travel for Glossopdale will take place next week.

It will discuss ways of improving public transport and active travel including safer walking and cycling routes, car share schemes, e-bike hire and cargo bike deliveries.

The event, being held at Central Methodist Church in Glossop on Sunday 11 June, has been organised by Glossopdale Action for Sustainable Transport (GAST).

The group is co-ordinated by Move More Glossop and includes High Peak Green New Deal, CPRE - The Countryside Charity, and local cycling groups.

Helen Thornhill, Co-ordinator of the Sustainable Travel Campaign, said: “If you have an idea, opinion or have a general interest in the way we travel around the town, then please come, and add your voice to the conversation.

"The speakers we have lined up are all passionate about sustainable travel, but you are the people of the town, without your voice’s things won’t change for the better.

"We owe it to the next generation of Glossopdale to get it right, so let’s start making the changes needed now."

The meeting begins at 2pm, and the keynote speaker will be Lisa Hopkinson who has co-authored many important national reports on sustainability issues.

Also speaking will be Tina Heathcote of Buxton Town Team, which has been through a similar process in Buxton over the last couple of years and developed a Sustainable Travel Plan, and Damien Greenhalgh - a councillor on both High Peak Borough and Derbyshire County Councils.

Participants will then be able to take part in round table discussions on a number of key transport issues, so they can contribute to the development of a travel plan for Glossop.

A survey about local travel needs has already been completed by around 600 residents. Many of the ideas which have come up in the survey responses will be included in discussions at the public meeting.
