HPBC Leaders column: 'On your side for a safer and healthier High Peak'

High Peak Borough Council leader Cllr Anthony Mckeown (left) and deputy leader Cllr Damien Greenhalgh

Ensuring people feel safe and secure in their home and local community should be the first priority of any government.

It is the bedrock on which opportunities are built, communities can thrive, and local economies can prosper.

This week we mark Anti-Social Behaviour Awareness week, but all year round as your local council, we work in partnership with the community and the police to keep High Peak a safe and pleasant place to live, work in and visit.

We know the impact crime and anti-social behaviour can have on individuals and communities.

We are determined to do everything we can, working in partnership with local communities and the police, to crack down on all types of anti-social behaviour from graffiti on public buildings and fly-tipping to criminal acts of vandalism and hate crimes - such as the recent hate crime in Whaley Bridge, where a Pride flag was selectively targeted and burned in a park.

We are aware that some communities are more affected by anti-social behaviour than others. To help address these issues we have been improving our links with Derbyshire Police, with councillors meeting their community police team here in High Peak to flag issues that you have raised with us.

Similarly, Jon Pearce, Labour’s parliamentary candidate, has had positive meetings with the Police to discuss issues that have been raised with us on thedoorstep particularly around drug related crimes and anti-social behaviour.

Wednesday 5 July 2023 marked the 75th anniversary of the creation of the NHS by Clement Attlee’s Labour Government. We want to take the opportunity to thank all the people that make up the NHS for all they have done and continue to do in ever more challenging conditions.

The NHS is a source of national and international pride, and Labour’s proudest achievement. We will fight to secure its future for the next 75 years.
