HPBC Leaders Column: 'Local, trusted and on your side'

High Peak Borough Council leader Cllr Anthony Mckeown (left) and deputy leader Cllr Damien Greenhalgh

Introducing a new column from the leadership team at High Peak Borough Council.

This is the first of a new weekly column from your local High Peak Borough Council leadership team.

We want to thank everyone who participated in the recent local elections despite the extra steps you had to take to vote. We are grateful for the overwhelming support we received. Our current MP and member of the Conservative Government encouraged people to vote for a competent council, and Labour achieved its best result in over 20 years.

Labour has a progressive plan for a greener and fairer High Peak. We know that many people in High Peak are suffering from the cost-of-living crisis, with mortgages spiralling, wages stagnating and the highest taxes in 70 years.

Keir Starmer, Labour's leader, has challenged all Labour councils to do everything we can to support people through this crisis, and we will leave no stone unturned to find ways to support you.

As well as pledging to improve how the Council works, we made five pledges to you. We will revitalise our town centres, work to deliver more affordable and warmer homes, invest in our parks and leisure centres, empower our communities and lead the way to a greener future.

We know our task will be made harder by the fact that the Conservative Government has abandoned High Peak. We have seen it in Glossop, where our promised levelling up funding went south. And then just last week in Buxton when the Government announced that the long-promised Health Hub was being shelved.

There are still some glimmers of hope where solid local partnerships are working, as seen by the Glossop North End Community Sports Hub, which made a huge step forward last week.

We will not be dissuaded from making the case for High Peak. We believe it is a great place to live with limitless potential. We are ready to work with anyone with the area's best interests at heart.

Finally, last weekend saw the brilliant GlossFest take place in Glossop, a great weekend of free music at the heart of our town. Our personal thanks to all involved in putting this fabulous community event together.
