Glossop residents are invited to Norfolk Square to join a 'Big Squat' and raise awareness about the millions of people who do not have access to a safe toilet.

The event featuring family fun activities takes place on Saturday 19 November - the UN’s annual World Toilet Day.

Glossop Labour Club, High Peak Green New Deal, Glossop Green Churches, Glossopdale Fairtrade Group have joined together for the initiative and are aiming to make Glossop the first ‘toilet twinned town’ in the High Peak.

Twinning a toilet, for just £60, enables a vulnerable family living in the Global South to build a basic toilet, gain access to clean water and to learn more about health and hygiene.

A number of local businesses and organisations have already signed up to contribute to fund-raising for at least 20 twinned toilets.

Collection boxes will soon be found in Panaderia Blue, A’bout Thyme, The Bureau, 2 Hares, Thrive, Glossop Labour Club, the Pilates Studio and more.

Organisers hope to raise funds by getting people to ‘Spend a penny’ preferably £1 at ‘The Big Squat’ from 1pm to 1.30pm.

Cherry Baker of The Pilates Studio and the Mayor of High Peak Councillor Ollie Cross will start off a short fun activity session. Photos and selfies will be posted online to raise awareness

Then from 2pm to 4pm there will be free family fun games at Glossop Labour Club, on Chapel Street, including activities for kids such as ‘wrapping up the Mayor’, and a Soggy Bottom Bake Sale. It will also feature an exhibition showing how vital good sanitation is for people and the planet.

All are welcome.
