Golden anniversary celebrations for Glossop and District Probus Club

Glossop and District Probus Club enjoyed its 50th anniversary with a celebration dinner for members and their guests.

The club got together at Glossop Golf Club and members looked back on the club’s many events since its formation in June 1973 and to the future.

Guests included High Peak MP Robert Largan who was warmly welcomed by club officials.

Although the club dates to 1973 it could have begun much earlier. In 1970, Glossop Rotary Club’s then president Frank Dearnley tried to get a branch of Probus off the ground.

Frank believed that Probus, an international club for retired professional businessmen, would be ideal for Glossop. It would give ‘retirees’ an opportunity for friendship, fellowship and fun.

Three years later sufficient interest had been generated and Glossop and District Probus Club was formed.

Membership is now approaching 70, with meetings held on the third Wednesday of every month in Glossop’s Central Methodist Church Hall from 10m to noon.

The club is now inviting men who are retired to consider joining by dropping in on the third Wednesday to see what there is to offer, or by calling club secretary Derek Scott on 07704 357444, or membership secretary Mike Bull on 01457 867034, for more information.
