Glossopdale teacher in TV show

Glossopdale art teacher Lucy Wood tells us about her appearance on last Wednesday’s episode of Sky’s Landscape Artist of the Year.

Filming took place in Blackpool in typical ever changing British weather as the contestants were asked to paint a scene of what they saw in front of them. Lucy (who was cast as a wildcard in the episode) explains further, “We had to be there at six in the morning and the best bit was the camaraderie with all the other artists, the camera crew were very enthusiastic and the whole spectacle of the event was really exciting so it’s been nice coming back to tell the students about it to enthuse lessons. This year I’ve decided to do things that are out of my comfort zone so I decided to apply which will hopefully inspire students to do the same.”

The contestants had four hours to complete the task but unfortunately, the weather wasn’t on their side as it began to rain and as a result of this, Lucy tells us “It rained all over my painting, it was water colour and it just dissolved so I had to get oil paint to put over the top of it … it looked alright by the end”. Although she didn’t win, the program has inspired her to continue applying to things outside of her comfort zone.

Lucy also sells her art via her website which is inspired by her local surroundings of Derbyshire and Yorkshire and has an upcoming exhibition at Cannon Hall which is running from 10th February - 7th May 2023 where Lucy’s and other local artists' art will be on display.
