Glossop RBL branch to hold special service to remember the fallen

REMEMBERING: A past Drumhead Service in Glossop.

The Glossop branch of the Royal British Legion is holding a Drumhead Service in Manor Park's Garden of Remembrance on Sunday afternoon (9 July) and everyone is invited.

The garden, popularly called the Rose Garden, dates back to July 19, 1931, when it was opened and dedicated to the memory of the men of Glossop and district who fell in the Great War.

That service followed a parade by members of the then recently formed Glossop branch of the British Legion from the market ground.

The garden had been created by ex-servicemen, the roses donated by Glossop Co-operative Society, a stone memorial tablet given by a Mr S Skelton.

Similar parades and services continued for many years until being replaced by Drumhead Services which originated from the 18th century when they were held on battlefields, drums stacked in top of each other to form an altar.

This Sunday’s service, which begins at 2.30pm, is to remember ‘those who gave their lives in the service of their country’ and to celebrate the reign of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

It will be similar in format to the Remembrance Day services held in November featuring Glossop Old Band and will be led by the Rev Norman Shaw. David Halligan is parade marshal.

There will be traditional thanksgiving and Remembrance hymns, readings, prayers, the Last Post, Reveille, the Kohima Epitaph and the National Anthem.

Glossop’s last big Drumhead Service, which was attended by the Duke of Norfolk, was held in 2014 to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.
