Glossop church receives eco award

The Glossop Parish Church of All Saints has been recognised for its work by achieving the Eco Church Gold Award.

The church is the first in the Diocese of Derby and the 31st across England and Wales to be given the honour.

Two Eco Church Assessors visited earlier this month to look at four main areas - worship and teaching, management of buildings and land, community and global engagement, and lifestyle.

The Assessors commented on the committed, engaged, and compassionate team at Glossop Parish Church of All Saints and were inspired by the collaborative approach and the innovations made.

In November, the church joined representatives of other churches and community groups across Glossopdale to launch the ‘Toilet Twin Glossop’ campaign

The Gold Award recognises the significant work of individuals – not least Barbara Fearnley and Eric Igo – and groups in these four areas.

Among the highlights noted by Assessors was around the use of the churchyard as a shared space, and work to engage with the local community, through signage, practical conservation, on-line blogs and work parties.

Efforts to work with and learn from a network of ecumenical and community partners was praised alongside work to highlighting issues around air pollution and comprehensively recording and promoting biodiversity on the church grounds.
