Glossop butcher is lord of the pies after winning top award for chicken, ham and broccoli recipe

Joel receives his award

A Glossop butcher has won a top award for his dry cured bacon.

Adam Gray the manager of Mettricks Butchers, on the High Street, was delighted to win a gold award with the treacle dry cured bacon a customer favourite.

John Mettrick said: “We are very proud of the range of different flavoured Bacons we produce in Glossop and it’s nice to add Treacle dry cured to the list of national award winners we
produce.

“Adam is a perfectionist when it comes to his recipes and the award is a recognition of this and his presentation skills.”

Meanwhile, Joel Cuncliffe also scored well at the National Craft Butchers Awards.

Having already won a gold award for his chicken ham and broccoli pie earlier this month, his pie went on to win the coveted Best Hot Eating pie in the country.\

He said: “It was a bit of a shock when they walked in, I was just told to show up today with fresh stuff and they gave me the award.

“It took my breath away, to say it was my first award as well was just amazing.

“I had just tried it on my own at one point, I did it at home and I thought thats’ a really nice pie, so I brought it into work let them all try it and everyone said I had something there and that I should enter it into the competition.

“When they came in they told me that I had won and were asking me how long I had been baking for, honestly it was gobsmacking. A privilege to win it.”

London president and National Executive member Richard Douglas travelled from Bromley, south London, to present Joel who hails from Oldham with his award.

The Bakery team of Duncan Edge and Sam Macklin worked alongside recently qualified apprentice Joel to produce the award-winning pie.

Joel developed an excellent pie filling that the head judge said was tasty and that he would love one of the pies for his tea.

Mr Mettrick said: “It’s great to see a young butcher keeping up Mettrick’s tradition of helping produce award winning pies.”

This year’s product awards saw intense competition with entries from Craft Butchers across England and Wales, with a panel of judges evaluating the products for their, taste, smell, and appearance.
