Former Mayor of Glossop Ian Higton has died

Ian Higton, a former Mayor of Glossop, has died at his home in North Wales at the age of 91.

Before the formation of High Peak Borough Council, Glossop had its own Mayor.

Ian was the youngest person to hold the post and was Mayor of Glossop from 1964-1965 with his wife Marion, who predeceased him, Mayoress.

In holding the position, he was carrying on a family tradition following in the footsteps of his father Ernest Higton, who was himself Mayor of Glossop in 1949-50.

Ian, Marion and their three sons Robert, David, and Andrew moved from Glossop in 1972.

An article featured in the Glossop Chronicle at the time said the couple have been involved in a number of local organisations.

Speaking at the time, Mr Higton said: “I suppose we have fallen for that area because of our weekend visits. But it will be a big wrench to leave out many friends in Glossop.”

Mr Higton is survived by his three sons, daughters-in-law and 12 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A funeral service will take place at Colwyn Bay Crematorium, from 11:45am on Friday 9 December. Family flowers only.
