Cadent thanks motorists after A57 temporary lights cause long delays

The work on the A57 was carried out by Cadent

Cadent has thanked residents and motorists affected by temporary traffic lights on the A57 in Glossop for their patience.

Four-way lights were in place near the roundabouts close to Primrose Lane and Simmondley Lane from 22 June, before being removed late on Tuesday afternoon (27 June).

This was to enable Cadent, which manages the local gas network, to repair a gas pipe leak.

Many people have taken to social media to express their frustrations about long delays and disruption on the main route to get in and out of Glossop.

Some residents also pointed out that the work appeared to only be taking place on the pavement and nobody could be seen working on the site on multiple occasions.

The Glossop Chronicle put these issues to Cadent, who have said the lights were necessary to 'help manage a safe work area' and the absence of staff on site were to allow 'tests and checks' to be carried out.

Trevor Lubbock, Customer Operations Area Manager at Cadent, said: “My team has been carrying out urgent works to repair a leak on a gas pipe.

“We’ve done specialist work over the last couple of days to fix the pipe ‘live’ – meaning gas kept flowing, without interruption.

“While our priority has to be keeping everyone safe, we appreciate it’s caused disruption and I want to say thank you for bearing with us.

“The work is now complete and the temporary traffic lights, which we needed to help manage a safe work area, have now been removed.

“One of the things we needed to do was allow a period of 24-hours for tests and checks.

“We appreciate this can appear like no-one is on-site, but the tests were important to do.

“While we were there, we spotted another fault with a different underground utility and that’s been sorted by them at the same time – so, two jobs completed in one set of roadworks.”
