Almost half of High Peak Borough Council is made up of new councillors

With seven former mayors as well as several former council leaders and executive members not standing at the election, there was always going to be a large number of new councillors elected.

However, a further five councillors seeking re-election also lost their seats to Labour. This means there will be 20 new members on High Peak Borough Council.

Acknowledging the change, Council Leader Anthony Mckeown said: “The council will adapt to it. There are some of those voices - even some of the opposition - which I have valued because they’ve got that long-term experience both as a councillor and that experience of being involved.

“It will be a different place, there will be some of those voices that won’t be there, and it will be interesting to see what the new people bring to it.”

Among those who are returning to serve a further term is High Peak’s longest serving councillor David Lomax.

First elected in 1991, he retained his seat in the three-seat ward of Whaley Bridge.

Following the election, he is now the only Liberal Democrat left on the council, after the party lost seats in the Blackbrook and New Mills West ward.
