Something to crow about in Mossley

Everything is going blooming marvellously at a community gardening project in Mossley.

Incredible Edible Mossley are now savouring the fruits of their labour after working hard growing fruit, vegetables and herbs on a strip of land at Valeside.

Mary Mitchell, from the group, said: “Incredible Edible Mossley started in early 2015 as a community gardening group.

“Our aim is to follow in the footsteps, or muddy footprints, of Incredible Edible Todmorden which was set up several years ago where fruit, vegetables and herbs are grown all over the town, by the side of the canal, outside the police station and health centre, wherever there is a suitable space.

“A strip of land at Valeside was offered to us by another community group, the Friends of Mossley Park and we have fruit, vegetables, herbs, flowers, trees and bushes growing there.

“At the far end there is a seating area, with a wall made from pallets and decorated with bees made by members of Re-Create, strawberries and herbs were kindly donated by Muddy Buddies, topsoil and wood chippings have been brought from the piles near the bowling green at Mossley Park.

“All this is in an indication of great community co-operation and cross fertilisation with other groups in Mossley.”

Since July 2020, Incredible Edible Mossley has also helped to develop Pitch-In at Seel Park, home of Mossley AFC, alongside members of Re-Create.

Mary said as a community gardening group they would like more people to get involved, and would also be interested to hear about other pieces of land they could develop into similar community gardens.
