Scouts prepare for trip of a lifetime to South Korea Jamboree

FUNDRAISING: The top ten heading to South Korea from Tameside.

Ten Tameside Scouts will be jetting off on the trip of a lifetime next summer.

They are among 3,200 from the UK who have been selected to join the 50th World Scout Jamboree taking place in South Korea in August 2023.

Set to be the biggest Scout camp on the planet since the start of the Covid pandemic, 50,000 young people from almost every country in the world will spend 12 days together sharing adventures, gaining new skills and experiencing different cultures.

The local representatives, who will all be in the 14-18 age range when the Jamboree takes place, are:

Tame Valley District: Lucas Shaw and Keira Pope (2nd Stalybridge) and Olivia Farrell and Jessica Williams (5th/7th Dukinfield)

North Tameside District: Harrison Pepper (Broadoak Explorer Scout Unit)

Tameside South District: Tyler Barnes and Logan Storie (Haughton Valley Explorer Unit), Nathaniel Mountain (Mountbatten Explorer Unit), Harriet Twinn and Amanda Charlton (5th Hyde Explorer Unit)

Several leaders from across the borough have volunteered to be part of the international service team in charge of the day-to-day running of the campsite and as unit leaders looking after the young people.

Although the Jamboree itself is more than a year away, the 'journey' has already begun with a series of training camps, team building and social events.

The emphasis on building self reliance and independence also applies to fundraising.

Each Scout has to raise £3,500 - the total cost per head which includes travel and accommodation - with support from their own local groups.

The 5th/7th Dukinfield, based at Dukinfield Moravian Church, are organising plant sales, aluminium can collections, bag packing, car washes and a '100' Club draw.

Jessica and Olivia have their own Facebook pages selling homemade crafts and gifts for different seasons and occasions such as Valentine's, Mother's Day and now Easter.

They have also had stalls on Ashton Market.

Members of the 2nd Stalybridge will be bag packing at Asda Ashton on 16 April.

They are also organising a plant sale - for details email superscout@sky.com

Supporters can pick up a quiz sheet from the Scout Hut, off Stamford Drive, on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday evenings.
