Removal of Broadbottom graffiti welcomed

The vast majority of a raft of graffiti in Broadbottom - which had been branded "disgusting" and "deplorable" by local residents and politicians - has now been removed.

At the end of last month, vandals had been on a spree in parts of the village, spraying signage and other objects with red paint.

The worst affected area was around Besthill Bridge, close to the Trans Pennine trail on the border with Charlesworth, but some also appeared at the Gorsey Brow end of Hague Road.

Longdendale councillors Jacqueline Owen and Janet Cooper said they were both “appalled” by the vandalism, while local MP Jonathan Reynolds described it as “deplorable”.

The two councillors liaised with Tameside Council's Neighbourhood Manager, who arranged for a team to clean up the graffiti and work with police to identify the offender(s).

Most of the graffiti had been cleaned by the end of last weekend.

Cllr Owen commented: "Cllr Cooper and myself were appalled by this act of vandalism, so are pleased to see that the graffiti has now been removed. We will continue to work with council officers and the police to monitor the situation."
