Mossley maths teacher adds up the miles for charity

A hard-working teacher is cycling the length of the country to raise money for charity.

Chris Smith, who is a maths teacher at Mossley Hollins, is cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats from August 1 to raise money for Leukaemia and Myeloma Research UK.

He hopes to complete the bike ride by August 13 and has been busy clocking up the miles on the hills around Saddleworth.

He said: “I’ve been asked a few times why.... well I quite enjoy a bit of a spin around on a bike and was looking for a challenge, so I thought the 1,000 mile route seemed like a suitable way to spend two weeks of the summer holidays.

“Secondly, I’m aiming to raise money for Leukaemia and Myeloma Research UK.

“I’ve picked this charity, well my mum did, as she’s currently undergoing treatment for myeloma and we both want to give something back to help raise funds as it’s one of the lesser well known cancer charities.

“Also, a close friend of the family is currently receiving treatment for leukaemia and this has affected other members of my family in the past. So this charity seemed like an obvious choice.”

So far Chris has raised £2,430.
