Denton Wellness Centre is officially open

After months of anticipation, the new £16 million Wellness Centre in Denton is now open.

The flagship Active Tameside centre on Lance Corporal Andrew Breeze Way opened its doors to the public for the first time at 6am this morning (Monday).

But it was officially opened in a ceremony yesterday (Sunday), when Tameside Council's Executive Leader, Cllr Brenda Warrington, and Active Tameside Chief Executive Chris Rushton unveiled a plaque.

A second plaque was unveiled by Kerry Williams and her daughter Lucie to open the centre’s disability facilities. Lucie is disabled and Kerry was involved in the consultation over their design to ensure the building is accessible and caters for everyone.

Also present were Denton MP Andrew Gwynne and the Civic Mayor of Tameside Cllr Leigh Drennan.

Mr Gwynne, who had a tour of the facilities on Friday, tweeted on Sunday: "Proud to attend the official opening of the Active Tameside Denton Wellness Centre today, and to say a few words at the ceremony. It's an amazing new leisure facility..."

The MP was also pleased to see a commemoration of the original 'Mr Denton' - Cllr Fred Worthington, who tirelessly campaigned for a local swimming pool - at the centre.

Active Denton closed on Friday with key services moving to Tameside Wellness Centre. Swimming lessons were held in the new pool over the weekend so that not a single swimming lesson was cancelled during the seamless changeover.

The centre - which was initially expected to open in April - combines leisure, community and wellness facilities, including swimming pools, a spa, gym, bowling alley, soft play area, studio spaces and more.

A sensory garden on the roof is also set to open this summer.

Tameside Council said in a statement: "Thanks to all our partner organisations who have helped turn our vision into reality and to everyone who attended for making it a wonderful event."

Cllr Warrington said: “I’m delighted that Tameside Wellness Centre – Denton is now open for our residents to enjoy and benefit from the wonderful facilities.

“I’d like to thank all those involved in bringing our vision to reality and creating a top-class facility that has something for everyone, from the latest leisure equipment to creative community spaces that will help bring people together and keep as active and healthy as possible.”

Mr Rushton said: “We are delighted to be ‘up and running’ at the Wellness Centre, which is already proving to be hugely popular. The Wellness Centre is iconic in every sense and will be a force for good in our ongoing quest to help Tameside residents live their best lives.”

The wellness centre project was drawn up under former council leader Kieran Quinn, who described it as the 'jewel in the crown' of £20m worth of leisure investment in the borough.

Work on the centre, built on brownfield land on the former Oldham Batteries site in the heart of the town, started in February 2019 by developer Network Space and construction company Willmott Dixon.
