Denton theatre group to put bullying under the spotlight with new production

A Denton-based theatre group recently welcomed two guests to observe rehearsals for their new show which delves into online safety and combating bullying on social media.

'Safe Arts In Education' is a musical theatre piece created by the intergenerational team of volunteer collaborators at Ensemble Theatre.

The production aims to deliver peer education through the use of theatre, workshops and question and answers sessions with the characters.

The youth performance, led by creative director and script writer Janet Fagan, had a visit from Hyde PCSO Christine Hill.

Christine spoke to the group and highlighted the importance of reporting incidents to the police to prevent crimes and ensure the safety of individuals online.

She said she thoroughly enjoyed watching the talented young performers showcase a snippet from the show and praised them for their role in spreading such an important message.

She added: "I have never seen a production like this before and it will be so powerful for young people to educate other young people about these topics."

Tameside Community Computers (TCC) made a generous gesture by providing technical support during the rehearsals. They donated an Apple MacBook to aid with the tour's sound requirements.

TCC directors Kerry and Mike also took the opportunity to address the young actors about the dangers of social media, before commending them for their energy, enthusiasm and authentic performances.

Mike expressed admiration for their dancing and singing abilities, emphasizing the importance of the message they were conveying.

Kerry said the young people were "very welcoming" and "clearly had a passion" for performing. She believed that this approach would greatly benefit a wider audience of young people.

TCC will be sponsoring the production and supporting the tour with local schools. They currently offer a recycle scheme and donate computers and phones to young people and schools who may be struggling with costs and access.

Education about online safety is also important to their team, not just for young people but adults too.

The tour will begin at Denton West Community Centre in Dane Bank on Friday 7 June at 7pm and tickets are available now.

Ensemble Theatre Inclusive Arts was founded by Janet Fagan to support people’s health and well-being after the difficult times during lockdown and the pandemic.

Janet said: “We aim to bring people together to support health and well-being, community cohesion and community theatre at its best.”

Janet runs weekly workshops in dance, drama, media, singing and theatre production for young people and adults.

The workshops take place between 6-8pm on Thursdays for young people and on Fridays for adults, who also meet from 6-8pm, at New Chapel Unitarian Church, Denton.

The group has benefited from Action Together funding with Jigsaw Housing Neighbourhood Team helping to fund venue costs at The Premier Lounge for the staging of ‘Mission’.
