Dave Sweetmore column: Busking Droylsden singer is ahead of his time

TALENT: Alex, busking in Manchester, has built a huge following on social media.

In his latest column, the Tameside Radio presenter shines the spotlight on a talented young Tameside singer who "has the music world at his feet"...

It’s been an exciting time for Droylsden’s Alex Spencer. This week his second single ‘The Morning Times’ was released and he played his single release headline gig to a full crowd at Aldwinians RUFC Club.

Alex had already gained a reputation as Manchester’s favourite busker, often to be found outside the Arndale Shopping Centre.

Then in March this year during lockdown, he released his self-written debut single ‘Things Just Come And Go’, a song which not only quickly became one of the best singles of the year, but also raised a great amount of money for the Young Minds charity, when Alex decided to give a percentage of the money he had raised from the single to the amazing cause.

As well as releasing this single, as he’d been unable to busk in the city centre due to the pandemic, he also released many great covers of his favourite songs on social media, building an even bigger fast rising fanbase.

Legendary musicians and bands such as Liam Gallagher, Lady Gaga, and The Lathums, to name just a few, also began tweeting about the unbelievable talent Alex had.

Now this is impressive for any musician, but when you take into account Alex Spencer has done this at the age of 14 years old, it’s safe to say he has the music world at his feet and it is his for the taking.

Since lockdown ended he’s played on the main stage at two of the Made In Manchester festivals, he’s supported legendary Stone Roses tribute The Clone Roses, owning the room before the main act had even taken to the stage, played several Manchester gigs in his own right, been played on numerous radio stations, had his song playlisted for general play on many of them, and now has a diary full of live gigs booked in ahead of  him.

His current single, ‘The Morning Times’, is another brilliant, well written and well produced single that will only see the support and fanbase for Alex grow bigger and stronger, and with such a great future ahead he’s now also started to put his own band together.

If you are not familiar with him yet, I can’t recommend checking out his music enough, and of course following him on social media.

He’s one of the most talked about musicians from the area, he’s years ahead of his time, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the mighty Alex Spencer.
