Curtain goes up on comedy almost two years in the making

Hyde Little Theatre brings JB Priestley's highly entertaining Yorkshire comedy 'When We Are Married' to Hyde Festival Theatre this week.

The production, directed by Keith Dalby-Oldham, has been very nearly two years in the making, having been delayed by the pandemic.

In that time there have been some inevitable cast changes while the challenges of Covid-19 have continued.

The production comes to the Hyde Festival Theatre stage from Wednesday (9 February) to Saturday (12 February), with the curtain going up at 7.45pm each night.

For tickets and prices visit www.sparksem.co.uk or you can call 0161 327 2781 (Monday to Thursday 4-7pm).

The play was well received on its opening night, playing to an audience of around 150, including the Civic Mayor of Tameside Cllr Janet Cooper and her consort Mr Dennis Fitzpatrick, who even took to the stage at the end of the night to congratulate the cast.

The play tells the tale of three couples, old friends all married on the same day in the same chapel, who gather to celebrate their silver anniversary.

But when they discover that they are not legally married, each couple initially reacts with proper Victorian horror, before re-evaluating their marriages.

Hovering closely over the proceedings is the Yorkshire Argus’ alcohol-soaked photographer and a wickedly destructive housekeeper who is hoping to use the couples’ mortification to her own advantage.

The theatre group has also secured some 300 free tickets to give away to the show this week especially for local community groups.

The wonderful offer was secured thanks to grant funding through Tameside Council to help especially the vulnerable or isolated.

Local groups can still get in touch with HLT to book their free night out at the theatre.

Chairperson for Hyde Little Theatre Vanessa Rothwell said it was an ideal opportunity to encourage people back into the theatre with friends who can enjoy the show together.

Individuals will also receive a goody bag and the hope is they will want to return in the future to watch future shows too.

“We hope it will encourage groups to come back and see other productions within our programme throughout the year.”

If your group is interested you can apply for tickets by contacting Hyde Little Theatre through their Facebook page or email info@hydelittletheatre.co.uk
