Community garden in Audenshaw ‘isn’t just a garden, it’s a magical place’

Mother and son, Emma Louise Power and Alfie Ronald, created the fairy kingdom over lockdown. Now, it’s become an irreplaceable part of the community.

Alfie discovered the perfect spot for the garden in April and after decorating, the duo opened it up to be enjoyed by everyone in May.

Walking in, there are toys, fairies and a place for people to share their memories and wishes.

Emma added: “The garden is loved by all ages, not just by the kids. Lots of adults put their wishes in the jar because everyone needs that hope.

“I dress as a fairy and the children know me as ‘Fairy Emma’. I'll facetime the kids in costume, hold picnics, story times and do everything I can to help their mental health.

“Our community sometimes gets a bad rep, but I really love it and want everyone else to see how amazing we are.”

More recently, Emma held a Halloween charity event. Over 200 people attended to dress-up, play games and walk through the spooktacular garden last Saturday (October 30).

She sold tickets to raise funds for Kidscan Children’s Cancer Research, a charity focused on improving cancer treatment for young people.

Lisa Byron took her daughter Jessica on the trail and said: “Jess loved her time there. She talks about Fairy Emma, saying she’s magical and she loves her.

“What Emma and Alfie are doing is absolutely amazing for the community and we loved helping to raise money for Kidscan.”

Joanne Hodgkinson went to the fairy garden for the first time, adding: “I found it absolutely amazing and there was so much to see.

“Emma Louise Power and her team put on a wonderful event and should be extremely proud of themselves.”

The team who helped Emma put on the show-stopping event were Amy Haslam, Pamela Pratt, Lorraine Booth, Beverley Power, Sarah Leyland, Julie Burgess, Jenny Bowie, Jack and Jonathon.
