Church bells to ring out in Ashton for Queen's Jubilee

St Michael and All Angels Church in Ashton.

Church bells will ring out across Ashton on Thursday (2 June) in celebration of Her Majesty The Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

The bells at Ashton’s St Michael and All Angels Church will sound out to mark the landmark occasion.

The peel of bells will sound from around 3pm until 5pm.

We reported in March how the 13 bells at the church had sounded out across the town for the first time in years due to the pandemic, courtesy of the Manchester Cathedral Bell Ringers.

The peel attracted an appreciative audience across social media, residents delighted to hear the bells again after the pandemic.

Few parish churches can boast 13 bells, and originally the church had a peel of eight when it opened in 1779. Two more were added  in 1790. In 1818 when the third tower was built, the treble bell was thrown out, two recast and a tenor added.

When the tower was again rebuilt in 1888, two more trebles were added making a peel of 12, with the 13th bell added in 1926.
