Cancer Warriors art exhibition to open in Stalybridge

Astley Cheetham Art Gallery in Stalybridge.

A new exhibition opens at the Astley Cheetham Art Gallery in Stalybridge on Saturday 11 December.

'Isolation' is a collaboration of work by people who have been affected by cancer, either themselves or through supporting loved ones.

The idea for the exhibition came from Derrick Evans, who founded Cancer Warriors in Stalybridge back in 2014.

Derrick was encouraged by his therapist to use creativity to help him through the anxiety of hospital visits and so he turned to knitting and photography. He, in turn, encouraged people he came into contact with through Cancer Warriors to also explore their creative side.

“People affected by cancer lost a lot of the support around them during the lockdowns,” Derrick explained. “They feel a sense of isolation when they receive a cancer diagnosis and those feelings have been exacerbated by the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.

“Being creative has given people an outlet with something positive and tangible to focus on. I’ve been amazed by the artistic skills of people and wanted to showcase it in our community through the exhibition.”

The exhibition features work by five people. As well as Derrick’s photography the exhibition features drawings, paintings and beadwork pictures.

Cllr Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council’s executive member with responsibility for culture, said: “The positive effect of art and creativity on people’s health and wellbeing is well known. It is wonderful to see this work on display in the gallery and to share the stories of how art can help people through the most difficult time in their lives.

“Cancer Warriors do fantastic work in the local community and beyond and are there to support anyone who needs it.”

The exhibition at the gallery, which is situated upstairs in Stalybridge Library, Trinity Street, continues until Saturday 5 March. Admission to the gallery is free.

Cancer Warriors will be auctioning off their artworks at the end of the exhibition. Their hub on Melbourne Street, Stalybridge, offers support to anyone affected by cancer.
