A talented young sportsman has been presented with a prestigious award by the High Peak Cricket Society after demonstrating excellent levels of cricket.

Tom Lane, of Old Glossop Cricket Club, has been playing for 6 years and in this time has proven to have an incredible talent.

The 16-year-old was awarded the HPCS Junior Player of the Year, for which he was given The Geoffrey Wooley Trophy.

This accolade is granted annually to an Under 18 player who is a member of a High Peak club and had attained a high player standard during the season.

In an award ceremony, the trophy was presented by Billy Godleman, a former Derbyshire County Cricket Club Team Captain from 2016 – 2022, Alan ‘Bud’ Hill, President of the HPCS and also a former Derbyshire CCC player and Sean Walsh, the HPCS Chairman.

Taking place at Whaley Bridge Bowling Club, the evening saw players, coaches and captains gather to celebrate the wonderful sport of cricket.

Tom, a Glossopdale School student, is a key member of Old Glossop Cricket Club, where he is coached by Robbie Barrow and Alexis Newby.

They have taken him from junior cricket through to the 1XI in the Derbyshire and Cheshire Cricket League.

Tom plays for the Greater Manchester Cricket League interleague team and is also a member of Derbyshire County Cricket Club’s U16 team, training in Derby two nights a week.

A fast bowler and a left-hand batsman, Tom has his sights set on becoming a first-class cricketer. Advancing with his career, he is due to start Myerscough College in September on their BTEC Cricket Studies Level 3 course.

He hopes to continue playing at Old Glossop and Derbyshire as he progresses.

In a post on their website, Old Glossop congratulated Tom on his amazing achievement.

“We are all so proud of Tom for all his achievements over the last year. Keep up the hard work.”
