Star Man Alwyn Is On His Way To Ashton

The 2022 season has only just ended but Ashton CC are making earlier plans for the 2023 campaign.

Building on their success this year when they took the GMCL Division 3E title, winning every game in the process, Ashton have signed West Indian Alwyn Williams as the Club professional for next year.

Williams is a hard hitting left handed batter and right arm fast medium bowler.

Over the last couple of years he has broken into the Jamaica Scorpions national team having had an outstanding record in the intra-island competitions and looks to be a real capture for the Rayner Lane club.

David Mellor, Ashton President, told Reporter Sport: “Five years ago the Committee at the Club set out on a plan to progress with the objective of rebuilding the cricket section; developing juniors, improving facilities and competing at a higher level.

“We have invested significantly in our facilities; seen juniors develop and move into senior cricket and this season has seen the rewards of this.

“Moving forward to the next level we recognise that a young team will need an experienced player who will not only contribute on the field but also be actively involved in the junior section.  We feel that Alwyn will fit this bill admirably”.

Club captain Dan Hawthorne added: “Alwyn is a hugely ambitious cricketer who wants to go as far as possible in the game. He has expressed a desire to gain experience in England and we are not only glad to be able to offer him that opportunity but also to have someone of his ability and attitude in our team.

“I’m really excited at the prospects for next year as we look forward to a successful season and the further improvement and development of a team which has showed so much promise”.

The next season is still nearly seven months away but things are certainly looking bright for Ashton.
