The 2022/23 season of the Stalybridge Snooker League started on September 29 with the traditional openings of the George Fletcher and Gordon Clay trophy finals.

These are played between last year’s league and cup winners in both the snooker /billiards and whist activities. This year’s venue was the Hyde Club who were one of the teams in the whist final.

The Gordon Clay, whist, was played between St Peters, league winners and Hyde Club, cup winners. It was played over 20 ends and the game was quite close early on with and St Peters were eight points ahead after eight ends.Over the next four ends St Peters extended their lead to 18 points and continued to pick up points to the 20th end. They eventually won 140 to 120.

The George Fletcher, snooker, was played between Staly Vegas, league winners, and Mossley B, cup winners. The game was played over five frames, two snooker, two billiards and one snooker doubles. Mossley took the first snooker frame but Staly responded by winning the first billiards frame. Mossley won the second billiards frame to lead 2-1 and then took the second snooker frame on the black to clinch the trophy 3 to 1.

The league, which takes place over 20 weeks, starts properly on October 6 and should finish around the end of March, when the knockout competitions commence.
