Having captained the Under 18s to FA Cup glory in front of 67,000 fans at Old Trafford last season, Manchester United defender Rhys Bennett sampled his first taste of action for the Red Devils’ first team last week.
The former Russell Scott Primary School and Audenshaw High School pupil made the trip to Sevilla for United’s mid-season friendly against Real Betis.
Rhys, who was awarded his first professional contract with the club in January 2022, replaced the injured Teden Mengi in the 1-0 defeat in Spain.
Despite hitting the big time with one of the biggest clubs in the world, Rhys, a former Stalybridge Celtic Juniors player, stays true to his roots and regularly visits Russell Scott to inspire the next generation of aspiring male and female footballers.
In May of this year, Rhys attended the Denton-based school and brought the FA Youth Cup with him.
The hot prospect took time to answer questions from teachers and pupils, whilst also having his picture taken. We spoke to Rhys about his aims and ambitions with the club, amongst other topics.
Now that the World Cup is over, United return to domestic action and were in Carabao Cup action against Burnley, held at Old Trafford, on Wednesday night.
They make their Premier League return on Tuesday 27 December against Nottingham Forest at home.
