Mother and daughter duo achieve World Champion titles

Kickboxing duo Madison and Kelly Buxton have returned from the WKC World Championships with a selection of gold medals between them.

Copley Academy student, Madison, has proven to be unstoppable in the field of martial arts. At just 13 years old, she has attended multiple prestigious competitions, and most recently achieved world success.

Competing in Killarney, Ireland, Madison achieved gold medals in her open weight, points sparring and team event categories, as well as a silver in light contact.

These accolades make her a world champion in her respected category, an incredible accomplishment for such a young athlete.

The 13-year-old has lived and breathed kickboxing before she even learnt to speak. Her mother, Kelly, had competed from a young age, securing world medals herself.

Naturally, this influenced Madison to start her own sporting journey.

Kelly also worked incredibly hard to achieve a world title in the recent championships, sharing the amazing sport with her daughter.

This is the highest Madison has ever finished at this competition, leaving her family feeling very proud.

“We’ve been to World Championships before, but Madison has only ever come away with a bronze or silver before, so for her to win three golds and a silver after Covid and a lack of tournaments was amazing.

“The competition runs over four days and unfolds like a tournament would, it was a great week for us and we’re so proud of Madison,” Kelly said.

Madison trains six days a week and has been doing this since she was four years old. This commitment and drive certainly pays off in her performance, where she continues to impress.

Coaching at Evolution Martial Arts in Hadfield, Kelly puts Madison through her paces through various sessions. In the build-up to a competition, Madison completes an intense training camp.

During these camps, she will take on double training sessions, go on runs and compete in tournaments – an incredible commitment.

Kelly and Madison now set their sights on the 2023 World Championships in Orlando, Florida. Before this, they will need to qualify at the National Championships in March.

2023 will be a pivotal year for Madison, who is set to enter a new age group, posing new challenges for her and her team.

But Madison simply loves kickboxing and is beyond excited to see her future unfold in the sport.

She is set to have an incredible future, and with her mum by her side, there's nothing she can't achieve.
