John 'Wiz' Cawthorne: Tributes Pour In Following Death Of Mossley AFC Legend

Tributes have poured in following the death of much-loved Mossley AFC legend John Cawthorne, who sadly died earlier this week.

Known to many as ‘Wiz’, John was a respected figure at Seel Park and a popular figure on the terraces amongst the Lilywhites’ faithful

A long-standing volunteer with the club, John took on many roles and was considered to be the voice of Seel Park with his enthusiastic approach to matchday announcing.

John’s commitment to the club stretched way beyond the terraces, however, as he also compiled the hugely popular Mossley Web - a historical website with match reports and stats pertaining to the club.

The website, which was regularly updated, contains sections on stadium history, early history, former players, former managers and honours.

Social media was awash with messages of condolences following the announcement of John’s death. 

Chairman Stephen Porter posted the following statement: “Absolutely heartbreaking news. Seel Park and away games will not be the same without his love and enthusiasm for our club and football in general. You will be missed Deepest condolences to the family.”

Former player Ben Richardson, who racked up 212 appearances during his spells with the Lilywhites, said: “Absolutely gutted to hear this. A special, unique man and was the epitome of a Mossley man who lived, breathed and loved the club. RIP Wiz.”

John Warmby, club secretary, said: “I’m still in shock. I’ve lost a life long friend and someone I’ve been all over the country with watching our beloved Mossley FC since I was a young boy, together with my brother. His encyclopedic knowledge of Mossley FC never failed to amaze me. John was totally unique and someone I will miss dearly. RIP my friend, A Mossley legend”.

Former Mossley manager Peter Band (pictured)  tweeted: Legend @MossleyAFC. Thinking of all the family. RIP Wiz (Mr Mossley).”

Club legend Mike Fish, who made 313 appearances for the Lilywhites, tweeted: “Terrible news for @MossleyAFC. What a top, top man Wiz was he will be always remembered as a legend of the club. Thoughts are with the family x”. 

The Lilywhites’ players, staff and fans paid their respects before Tuesday evening’s 1-0 victory over Runcorn Linnets with a minute’s silence.

David Fish’s side have enjoyed a great start to the season, opening their campaign in the NPL West with two wins on the bounce.

They have a break from league action this weekend as Macclesfield visit Seel Park for the a clash in the FA cup preliminary round.
