Curzon miss out on play-offs in record-breaking season

Tameside Stadium, Curzon Ashton

Curzon Ashton narrowly missed out on a spot in the National League North play-offs on Saturday (29 April) after a 2-0 defeat to King’s Lynn Town.

The Nash needed to win their final match of the season to have any chance of finishing in the play-off spots but were denied by a top performance from the team placed second in the division. A first-half goal from Gold Omotayo gave the hosts the lead, before Josh Barrett doubled their lead on the hour mark. The home side were reduced to ten men late in the second half and Curzon looked to take advantage of this, creating a number of chances, but could not manage to beat Tommy Dixon-Hodge in the King’s Lynn goal, and the game finished 2-0.

A season that has ended with a touch of disappointment, but one that Curzon should be very proud of, with many tipping the Nash to finish a lot further down the table, and some even predicting they would be relegated at the start of the season. Adam Lakeland’s men have gone beyond the expectations of anyone involved with the club, reaching their highest-ever points tally and breaking their record for most clean sheets in a single league campaign.

Curzon Ashton Chairman, Wayne Salkeld believes it has been a very successful season for the club, “No one would have thought we’d be here at the start of the season, we’ve got the lowest budget in the league and we’ve punched well above our weight, it’s been a great season for us and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved”.

Manager Adam Lakeland echoes those thoughts, “For us to even be competing for the play-offs is massive for us, with the size of the club and the resources we have”.

“We should all look back on this season with immense pride, we have taken great strides on and off the pitch this season, and just for us to take it into the final game of the season with something to play for is a big achievement for us”.

It has been a fantastic season for Curzon, perhaps even their best ever, and one that they can certainly take positives from, and build on going into next season.
