Eton representatives visit Oldham to mentor 40 students

Representatives from Eton college visited E-ACT The Oldham Academy North (TOAN) this term to host a mentoring day for 40 Year-9 students, including some from E-ACT Royton and Crompton Academy.

Various workshops focused on motivation, role models, growth mindset, positive framing and oracy.  The range of activities planned by Eton college aimed to enhance students' personal development and encourage them to reflect on their lives and understand their goals and ambitions.

Students then shared their findings with their peers, which helped them become more confident in public speaking.  The mentoring day was a huge success, and the participating students learnt a lot about themselves and how to take the approaches they studied back into their everyday lives and shared the academy.  This is the first of several events the academy is hosting, working alongside Eton college.

Eton college was founded in 1440 as an educational charity. Through research, digital resources, summer schools, visits and events, Eton Connect partners with schools to benefit children and teachers.

The college works with numerous state schools on activities of mutual benefit as part of the ‘Eton Connect’ programme.  They have also offered free self-study EtonX courses in response to the Coronavirus pandemic, which has been taken up by over 1,000 state-maintained schools in the UK.  They encourage their students and staff throughout their time at Eton to engage actively with service to their local communities.

“At TOAN, we are focused on ensuring that our students fulfil their full potential, and it’s been great having the representatives from Eton College in to inspire our Year 9s and get them thinking about their futures.”

Andrea Atkinson, Headteacher at E-ACT Royton and Crompton Academy, said:

“I know the Royton and Crompton students that went along to the mentoring day took a huge amount away from it, and it’s been brilliant working so closely with Eton College.  The partnership has really encouraged our students to think big, and I look forward to it continuing.”
