Time running out to have say on future of Goyt Valley House in New Mills

Goyt Valley House in New Mills - one of the care homes which could potentially close.

Time is running out for people to have their say on controversial proposals that could see seven care homes across Derbyshire shut down.

The 12-week public consultation on the future of accommodation for older people in the Derbyshire County Council residential care homes closes on Friday 4 March.

Goyt Valley House on Jubilee Street in New Mills is one of those under threat as it is in need of major refurbishment.

However, the move has prompted strong opposition locally as it is seen a much-valued facility.

DCC’s Cabinet launched the consultation after hearing significant repairs are needed at the homes, including replacing boilers, heating systems, and refitting all kitchens and bathrooms.

Further issues include the need for the properties to be rewired by September 2022 which means residents having to move out for up to 40 weeks for this to be completed.

Even if repairs are carried out, Cabinet was told that the homes are no longer fit for purpose.

The options in the consultation are:

•    rewire and carry out major works to refurbish the homes - this would require residents to move out for up to 40 weeks

•    close the homes and support residents to move to other local, suitable alternative provision

•    close the homes and support residents to move to any available suitable alternative provision

Strong opposition has been voiced in protest of the potential loss of Goyt Valley House.
